Rape - a pensionable occupation

As you probably know from previous posts Adam Carruthers, ex-senior police officer and convicted serial rapist and sex offender has taken his previous employers, Dumfries and Galloway Council to court for the re-instatement of his whole pension. At the moment he is only entitled to the money he paid in whilst a cop, roughly 35% or around £6,000 p.a.

From one of my readers:

"Read your blog and noted my comment......hope it helps a little........Carrying on in the same vein.........I know it is a common mistake to confuse the law with justice, however, it would add insult to injury if the sheriff ruled in favour of Carruthers...........It would make rape a pensionable occupation........I hope they realise that.....How sick would that be?"

I quite agree and many thanks for your comments. It would be extremely sick. This is an insult to his many victims, not to mention the whole process of getting justice through the Scottish legal system.

It's interesting that one could already assume the Scottish Legal Aid Board (SLAB) considers that rape and serious sexual offences, such as the ones committed by ex-cop Carruthers when he was on duty qualifies him for his entire pension ......thus making rape a pensionable occupation. Why assume this? I understand the SLAB have made up to £100,000 of legal aid available to Carruthers to fight this pension case.

I continue to throw my hands up in horror at the treatment of victims of serious crime and our justice system; and now also for the people who pay council tax and income tax. We know this money could be better spent - helping the cash-stapped rape crisis centres would be a very good way for starters. They really do save lives, yet Carruthers is claiming 'family hardship.' The pension cut Carruthers got was due to his own choice of heinous actions against many women, some of whom took their own life and others who tried to as a result of his sick crimes.

Remember, Carruthers lost his original criminal trial case, lost his criminal appeal against rape and indecent assault convictions and lost his two attempts to have his conviction quashed through Scottish Criminal Cases Review Commission. Surely that speaks volumes?

The conviction rate for rapes reported to the police in Scotland is a pitiful 2.9% of all cases. That says a lot about our criminal justice system, serial sex offenders like Carruthers and the treatment of victims through the process of getting justice.

This pension case returns to Dumfries Sheriff Court on 29th January. There are many people who have contacted me who will be there on the 29th January to protest against the misuse of public money for the financial gain of convicted sex offenders. Perhaps you might wish to join them?

This is incredible - rape and he thinks he should still get his full pension. The man should be put down - save us all money. And even worse the beast gets legal aid to help him.
So much for (Scottish) justice.

Hard to credit the MSP's would let these things happen with their push on justice and their campaign for stopping abuse of women.
I hope he loses, isn't allowed to appeal.
He's a sh*t of the first order.

He ruined our mum's life when he was a copper on duty. He should be strung up by the balls. Carruthers is a waste of space. He doesn't deserve a penny or freedom. We hate the man. Watch your back Carruthers. If any of us can get off work we'll be there on the 29th.

Thanks for stopping by Anon 1 and NF. If you can make the court on the 29th, then I think you will find like-minded people and great to push the point of the disgust of many decent people. If not and you have the time and the inclination please write letters to the relevant MSP's etc.
I so hope that the present Scottish Government will stop these kind of loopholes for convicted sex offenders and stop wasting money.
Best, Jane

Many thanks Eryl. If you're not tied up with work I hope you can get there. 10-1 and 2-4 are the court hours I think.
Thanks for the support, not just for me but for all women whose lives have been affected.

Anon 3, after Eryl, I'm so sorry that your mum and your family has gone through the mill because of this very rogue copper when he was on duty supposedly 'protecting the public.'
Your comment shows exactly why he shouldn't get a full pension.

I don't condone violence, but I do understand how you must all feel. My family, like yours, have seen some awful times with what he did to me so I really do feel for you all. I trust that there is some kind of a 'universal justice' for Carruthers and his ilk.
Many thanks for your support and I hope that your mum and your family will see happier times ahead after the deeds of Carruthers have impacted on you all so much.

Here's to real justice - and I think the more noise the victims and their families make the better. It shows the ripple effect of rape and sexual violence ....just as there are ripples with all crimes.
Best wishes, Jane

People need to speak up about this mad piece of so called justice. It's awful that he's even getting public money to fight for a pension he certainly doesn't deserve.
Well done Jane. I admire your strength of spirit.

Complete waste of money on that beast. A man who should never have been let out. F'ing madness all round. What's gone wrong with this country?

Thanks to both readers who have commented today.
It seems that there is a similarly strong feeling held by you both (and by other readers) about the crazy issues that affect the idea of a real justice for survivors/victims.
I just hope this campaign will make a difference as some good has to come out of all this madness.

People like Carruthers should be put down not given so much public money to help them try to get what they just don't have a right to.
Scandalous donesn't even come near it with this man. he should rot in hell asap.

Anon of the 13th, many thanks for your comments. They again show how people feel about this whole business of wasting vast amounts of public money for the benefit of unrepetant serial sex offenders.
In my mind Carruthers certainly doesn't have a right to a police pension and worse still to allow him the use of public money for his potential benefit from horrendous crimes. It beggars belief.

What on earth are the Legal Aid Board thinking of?
Giving him our hard earned money to fight for a pension he has no right to?
The country has gone completely crazy.

No place in our world for 'men' like him. Wasted time and money on beasts like Carruthers.

Anon B and Anon of 16th. Thanks to you both for your comments.
I too wonder just how the SLAB passed this case and gave him so much money to fight his pension case.
To rape and to sexually abuse are serious criminal offences for which Carruthers was found guilty and post-release is now serving time in the community on licence. They are most certainly not duties of a police officer, part of whose job description is to protect the public he serves.
I agree there is no place for an unrepetant person to be free in our society and to profit from his crimes. Proceeds of Crime Act? Hmmm, worth exploring that one! To receive a full pension would be exactly that.
